Does Fiverr take a bigger cut than Upwork?
Usually, yes: Fiverr charges a flat 20% seller service fee on every order with no tiers or volume discounts, versus Upwork's variable 0–15%. A $500 Fiverr order nets $400; the same amount on Upwork at 10% nets $450.
Does Toptal take a percentage from freelancers like Upwork does?
No, Toptal freelancers set their own rate and receive the full amount. Toptal's revenue comes from marking up that rate when billing the client (commonly estimated 40–100%+, not publicly disclosed), not from deducting anything from the freelancer's side.
How do I figure out what to charge to actually take home a specific amount?

Is going direct with a client always better financially?

Do buyers or clients pay fees too?
Yes, separately: Fiverr charges buyers a roughly 5.5% checkout fee, and Toptal clients pay the marked-up rate plus an optional $79/month access fee. Neither of these comes out of the freelancer's payment.
