What is a contract format?

A contract format is the standard order of sections in a written agreement: the parties, what each side will do, the price and payment terms, how the agreement ends, and the signatures.

A contract template is that format with the wording already written, so you fill in names, scope, fees and dates. Use the templates below for common client work, or the service contract format for clause-by-clause wording. These are general templates, not legal advice: have a local lawyer review high-value or unusual agreements.

  • Six contract templates plus a filled sample
  • Editable Word (.docx) and print-ready PDF
  • Numbered clauses and a signature block for both parties
  • Free for commercial use, no email required
  • General templates, not legal advice

Sample Contract: A Filled-In Example

Not sure what a finished contract looks like? This sample is the service contract filled in for a website redesign between two fictional companies. Use it as a reference for wording and layout.

  • Contract number CT-2026-015, effective 10/26/2026 (dates in MM/DD/YYYY)
  • Scope: discovery, UX and UI for 8 pages, development, QA, launch and training

  • Signed by both parties, with names, titles and dates

Standard Contract Format: Sections in Order

Most client contracts follow this order. Small jobs can merge sections; larger projects add schedules such as a scope of work.

Contract vs. Agreement vs. Proposal vs. Scope of Work

Four documents that often travel together. Use each at the right stage of a client project.

DocumentWhenBinding?Purpose
ProposalBefore the client decidesUsually not, until acceptedPitches the approach and price. Start from a proposal template
Scope of workOnce the project is agreedYes, when attached to a signed contractDetails deliverables, timeline and responsibilities. See the agency scope of work template
AgreementAny time two parties agree termsDepends on the terms and the lawA broad term. Many agreements are contracts, but not all are enforceable
ContractBefore work startsGenerally yes, once signedSets out both parties' obligations and what happens if they are not met

Taskip keeps the quote, contract and invoice on one client record: send the contract with Taskip e-signatures and invoice against its payment schedule.

Is a contract template legally binding?

A template is just a starting point. A contract is generally binding when both parties agree to clear terms, exchange something of value and sign it. Rules differ by country, so this is general information, not legal advice.

Does a contract need a lawyer?

Not always. Many businesses use templates for routine client work. For high-value deals, unusual risks or work in another country, a short review by a local lawyer is worth the cost.

How to Write a Contract From a Template

1

Pick the closest template

Choose simple, service, freelance, consulting, retainer or milestone, depending on how you price and deliver the work.

2

Fill in the parties and dates

Replace every placeholder in square brackets with both parties' legal names, addresses and the effective date.

3

Describe the scope

Write what you will deliver and what is out of scope, or attach your scope of work as a schedule.

4

Set the price and payment schedule

Fill in the payment table: amounts, due dates and whether tax is included. Add the late payment terms.

5

Check the protective clauses

Review revisions, ownership, confidentiality, termination and liability, and delete anything that does not apply.

6

Save as PDF and get it signed

Save a PDF so the terms cannot change, then sign on paper or send it for e-signature and keep the signed copy.

Common Contract Mistakes to Avoid

Most client disputes trace back to one of these gaps in the contract.

  • A vague scope with no "out of scope" line, so every extra request becomes a negotiation.
  • No payment schedule, or payment only at the end of a long project.
  • No limit on revisions, which turns a fixed fee into unpaid hourly work.
  • No termination clause, so neither side knows how to end the work or what is owed.
  • No governing law, which makes a cross-border dispute harder to resolve.
  • Changes agreed by phone and never written down or signed.

Contract Format Notes for India

The templates work for Indian clients with a few additions. This is general information, not legal advice.

  • Add both parties' GSTINs if registered, and say whether fees are inclusive or exclusive of GST. Most professional services are taxed at 18%.
  • Write amounts in INR and set the governing law to Indian law, with a named city for jurisdiction.
  • Stamp duty depends on the state and the type of agreement. Check your state's current rules or use e-stamping.
  • Electronic signatures are generally recognised under the Information Technology Act, 2000, with some document types excluded.

Five Clauses Every Client Contract Needs

If you only check five things before sending, check these.

  1. Scope: what is included, and what is not.
  2. Payment: amounts, due dates and late payment terms.
  3. Ownership: who owns the work, and when it passes to the client.
  4. Termination: notice period and payment for work already done.
  5. Signatures: both parties, with names, titles and dates.

Tips for Contracts Clients Sign Quickly

  • Attach the scope of work as a schedule instead of writing the scope into the legal text.
  • Put payments in a table with amounts and due dates. Clients check numbers faster than paragraphs.
  • Name the revision count, and the rate for extra rounds.
  • State the kill fee or cancellation terms up front, so ending early is not a surprise.
  • Send a PDF, not an editable file, so the terms cannot change after you send it.
  • Use e-signatures so the client can sign from any device and you know when they have.

Contract Format FAQs

What is the basic format of a contract?

Title and date, the parties, the scope of work, deliverables, payment terms, term and termination, confidentiality, intellectual property, liability, governing law and signatures. The table above shows each section with an example.

Is a contract template legally binding?

A template becomes a contract once both parties agree to its terms and sign it. Whether a particular contract is enforceable depends on its terms and the law that applies, so this is general information, not legal advice.

Can I write my own contract without a lawyer?

Yes, many businesses use templates for routine client work. For high-value agreements, unusual risks or contracts in another country, have a local lawyer review it before you sign.

Should I send a contract as Word or PDF?

Edit in Word, send as PDF. A PDF keeps the terms from changing after you send it. Use Word with Track Changes only when the client needs to propose edits.

Is a contract valid without a handwritten signature?

In most countries electronic signatures are accepted for business contracts, with exceptions for some document types. An e-signature tool also records who signed and when.

What is the difference between a contract and an agreement?

An agreement is any understanding between two parties. A contract is an agreement with the elements needed to be enforceable, such as offer, acceptance and something of value exchanged. In business the words are often used interchangeably.

Is a contract valid without stamp paper in India?

An unstamped agreement is not automatically void, but stamping rules depend on the state and the type of agreement, and an unstamped document can be harder to rely on as evidence. Check your state's rules or use e-stamping. This is general information, not legal advice.

Who makes these contract templates?

Taskip, client management software for agencies and freelancers. Taskip handles quotes, invoices, contracts, proposals, a client portal and projects in one place.
